Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) has advanced the development of the MC-21-310, a medium-range narrow-body passenger jet designed to utilize domestic components. On 3 August, the first production-standard MC-21-310 completed a flight from the Irkutsk Aviation Plant lasting approximately 1 hour and 23 minutes. This flight was intended to validate serial-assembly line procedures and test Russian-built onboard systems meant to replace imported parts. Following this, the aircraft completed a longer-distance flight from Irkutsk to Zhukovsky, lasting 5 hours and 50 minutes. During this mission, the crew reported that all systems operated normally. The development of the MC-21 emphasizes technological autonomy through the use of domestically produced engines, avionics, and aerodynamic structures, a process accelerated by international sanctions. In a subsequent long-distance successful test flight, the MC-21-310, flights of aircraft equipped with domestically produced PD-14 engines, traveled from Irkutsk to Zhukovsky near Moscow. During the flight, which lasted approximately five hours and 50 minutes, the aircraft reached an altitude of 12,100 meters and speeds of up to 850 km/h. This ferry flight, conducted without a full commercial load, allows the aircraft to move to the Gromov Flight Research Institute project aims for further inspections. While engineers aim to certify a 4,000 km range, current data suggests a commercial range of approximately 3,800 km with 175 passengers. Flight testing is expected to conclude in the first quarter of next year, with certification anticipated by the end of 2027. However, recent reports indicate that production the program is facing significant technical and logistical hurdles. Production is reportedly lagging behind original schedules. Despite successful test flights, schedules, and experts have expressed doubt regarding the aircraft's ability to resolve the broader aviation crisis caused by Western sanctions. To mitigate these challenges, observers suggest Russia may seek to form new technological partnerships with China and other BRICS nations. Recent technical reports highlight critical issues stemming from the localization of materials. The domestic composite wings, referred to as ‘black wings,’ are reportedly considerably heavier than traditional metal alternatives. Former Tupolev branch manager Stanislav Ryzhakov noted that the rush for material autonomy has led to these setbacks, which may force UAC to completely redesign the wing structure to address impacts on aerodynamic efficiency, payload, and fuel consumption. Additionally, former Airbus pilot Andrei Litvinov reported that the rapid replacement of Western components has caused the aircraft to weigh approximately 6 tons more than its original design specifications. This increased mass threatens the aircraft's commercial viability, potentially requiring a reduction in passenger and cargo capacity or higher fuel consumption to maintain performance.
