Russian military activity in Kharkiv region

Overview

Military operations near Kharkiv have seen conflicting reports regarding Russian territorial gains. While Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed the capture of Kozacha Lopan on September 1, subsequent reports from Russian-aligned channels suggested that forces had not established firm control and were instead engaged in heavy fighting and counterattacks.

Russian claims regarding the encirclement of Ukrainian troops have also fluctuated. Initial reports from the Institute for the Study of War noted unsubstantiated Russian claims of encircling 2,000 soldiers. By September 6, the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed to have surrounded 1,700 Ukrainian soldiers in a 46-square-mile ‘kettle’ in northern Kharkiv, stating the maneuver was intended to advance the frontline by at least 20 kilometers.
