Russian missile strikes have targeted major Ukrainian steel production facilities, resulting in casualties and operational suspensions. On August 11, a strike on the Zaporizhstal steel plant in Zaporizhzhia killed seven workers and injured at least 24 others. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that the assault utilized ballistic missiles supplied by North Korea, alongside Zircon hypersonic missiles and guided aerial bombs. The Metinvest-owned facility suspended all production following the attack. The Russian Ministry of Defense acknowledged striking a metallurgical plant in the region, claiming it was used for military purposes. On August 16, a subsequent strike hit the ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih industrial complex, Ukraine’s largest steel producer. The attack damaged critical energy and blast-furnace production facilities, killing two people and injuring 13 workers and contractors. The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed the strike, stating the complex was targeted using a combination of air-launched precision weapons, ground-launched weapons, and long-range drones. The facility produces rolled steel used in Ukrainian military equipment. ArcelorMittal has condemned the attack, emphasizing that the plant is civilian industrial infrastructure.
