Reports regarding the Russian Su-57 stealth fighter have highlighted both operational challenges and combat advancements. On October 29, 2026, a Su-57 was reportedly destroyed by fire at the Akhtubinsk airfield in the Astrakhan region. According to Ukrainian open-source intelligence analysts from the project Absoliutno Nadiine Dzherelo, the incident occurred during engine startup, causing the aircraft to burn while on the ground. While Russian authorities have not officially confirmed the incident, satellite imagery shows burn marks in a parking area typically used by Su-57 aircraft. If verified, this would represent the fourth Su-57 lost or significantly damaged by Russia in 2026. Previous reported incidents include two aircraft hit by Ukrainian drones at the Shagol airfield in April, and a crash in the Moscow region in July attributed to a friendly fire incident. Following the Akhtubinsk incident, Ukrainian military intelligence (HUR) suggested that low-quality imported aviation fuel may have caused the explosion of the aircraft, which is valued at approximately 150 million dollars. HUR noted that Russian domestic aviation fuel production has declined due to Ukrainian attacks, increasing reliance on imports. The intelligence agency identified a logistics scheme involving the Vadinar refinery in India, operated by Nayara Energy, which supplies fuel to Russia via sanctioned tankers. Additionally, the sanctioned firm RN-Aero, part of Rosneft, reportedly provides refueling services for the Su-57 fleet. In contrast to these technical setbacks, Military Watch Magazine reported that the Su-57 has gained significant combat engagement experience compared to Western aircraft like the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II. The aircraft has been utilized in military operations involving Ukraine for precision strikes, suppression of enemy air defenses, and interception of airborne threats. The United Aircraft Corporation has announced the delivery of new Su-57 models that incorporate technical modifications derived from this practical combat experience.
