Russian treason convictions for Ukrainian donations
Overview
Russian authorities have issued lengthy prison sentences to individuals for providing small financial donations to Ukrainian entities. In one instance, a 34-year-old man was sentenced to 13 years for “high treason” after making 11 transfers totaling approximately 24 dollars to a Ukrainian organization.
In a separate case, a pensioner in the Russian-occupied city of Berdyansk received a 14-year sentence for transferring 1,500 hryvnias (roughly 29 euros) to the Ukrainian Armed Forces via a mobile banking app.
Reports indicate a significant increase in political prosecutions within Russia. Data shows that 468 people were convicted of treason and espionage in 2025, and treason convictions in the first quarter of 2026 were reportedly 20% higher than the same period in 2025. Since the 2022 invasion, a total of 1,006 people have been convicted under such charges.
