Russia's diplomatic efforts for athlete reintegration
Overview
Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyaryov has accused European nations of obstructing Russian and Belarusian athletes from international competitions. During a meeting at the Kremlin, Degtyaryov claimed the EU is either denying visas or “organizing provocations” to prevent participation, noting that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) requires host countries to provide written guarantees for athlete admission. This follows specific instances, such as gymnasts being denied visas for championships in the Netherlands.
In response to these challenges, Degtyaryov confirmed that President Vladimir Putin has ordered a diplomatic operation to reintegrate Russian athletes into the global sporting community. The stated goal of this offensive is to ensure athletes can compete under the Russian flag and national anthem. According to Degtyaryev, this effort has already facilitated the return of Russian athletes to 24 sporting disciplines and the inclusion of junior athletes in 30 additional disciplines, following the IOC's decision to lift the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee.
