Overview
Saab has successfully completed the maiden flight of the Gripen F, a two-seat variant of the Gripen E fighter jet. The inaugural 40-minute flight took place at Saab’s airfield in Linköping, Sweden, conducted by Saab Chief Test Pilot Jakob Högberg and Brazilian Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Abdon de Rezende Vasconcelos.
The aircraft, developed through a partnership between Sweden and Brazil, features an extended fuselage, an increased wing area, a General Electric F414 engine, and a new active phased array radar system. The two-seat configuration is designed to improve pilot training and mission efficiency, including the ability to control unmanned combat aerial vehicles.
The program is entering an airborne testing phase to validate the aircraft’s full performance envelope, including speed, altitude, G-loads, and angle of attack. While the Gripen F is intended for the Brazilian Air Force, which has ordered eight aircraft, the variant has also received orders from Colombia and Thailand. The development process involved significant industrial cooperation with Brazilian companies such as Embraer AEL and Akaer.
