In late July 2026 a fast‑moving wildfire threatened burned about 77,000 hectares across the southwest of Madrid region and the Community neighbouring province of Madrid, Ávila, coming within about roughly 500 metres of Safari Madrid. The park activated emergency protocols, working with the Guardia Civil and local services. Staff entered the nearby Kuna Ibérica fauna centre and rescued a boreal lynx, an Iberian wolf and four vultures, anesthetising and later reviving them in temporary enclosures. A few days later the fire had scorched roughly 77,000 hectares across the Madrid region and the neighbouring province of Ávila, forcing The blaze forced the park to close for six days. Most days; most keepers were evacuated, leaving only a handful on site. Large evacuated while large species such as elephants and big cats could not be moved, but the animals that remained on site. Animals that stayed – including giraffes, ostriches, dromedaries, lions and alligators – stayed calm despite the smoke and sirens. The park later reopened to a limited number of visitors as vegetation began to recover, while staff continued to safeguard the fauna and monitor the rescued lynx, wolf and vultures for eventual return to their permanent habitats. Volunteer groups, including about 1,500 people coordinated by AnimaNaturalis, distributed food to wildlife in the affected zones and entered fire‑scarred areas with permission from the Unidad Militar de Emergencias. The Spanish Civil Guard set up a makeshift shelter in a bullring at San Martín de Valdeiglesias, evacuating horses, goats, cats, dogs and other farm animals. Greenpeace released aerial photographs showing the extensive devastation across Toledo, Madrid, Ávila, Segovia and Guadalajara, underscoring the scale of the summer 2026 fire season and the national emergency declared in response.
