Safety and inclusivity in personal protective equipment

Overview

Discussions regarding personal protective equipment (PPE) have focused on the critical importance of correct application and fit to prevent injury. Initial concerns highlighted that the effectiveness of gear in climbing and industrial height work depends on individual adjustment, manufacturer compliance, and thorough inspections. Improperly fitted equipment, such as loose waist or leg loops, can cause harnesses to shift dangerously during a fall.

Building on these safety requirements, industry leaders in the construction and engineering sectors are now advocating for more inclusive PPE to mitigate risks and recruitment barriers, particularly for women. Concerns have been raised that ill-fitting gear, including oversized waterproofs and improper safety boots, creates trip hazards and undermines worker confidence.

In response, the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB), in collaboration with the Women’s Engineering Society (WES), has introduced e-learning modules titled ‘PPE: Right Fit. Real Protection’. This training aims to educate workers and managers on the necessity of accounting for individual differences in body shape and medical needs to ensure intended levels of protection.
