European consumer and automobile organizations, including ADAC, Stiftung Warentest, and the Automobile-Moto Association of Slovenia (AMZS), have issued safety warnings regarding two child car seat models: the Britax Römer Baby-Safe Pro (when used with the Vario Base 5Z Isofix base) and the Axkid Minikid Core. In crash tests, the Britax Römer model exhibited a critical failure in a reclined position where the belt buckle opened or broke, causing the test dummy to be ejected. While the seat provided adequate protection in an upright position or when using a three-point vehicle belt, AMZS rated the reclined configuration as ‘bad’ due to the high risk of injury. Britax Römer stated they were surprised by the results, noting that internal tests had not revealed similar issues, and the company has not yet initiated a recall. The Axkid Minikid Core also failed frontal impact tests. In one instance, the support foot unlocked and the buckle broke; in another, the seat moved forward and the plastic frame struck the testing apparatus. Axkid has responded by stopping sales of the Minikid Core and initiating a voluntary recall, offering the Minikid Pro 4 as a free replacement. Following the initial warnings, Britax Römer has issued a voluntary recall for a specific batch of BABY-SAFE PRO infant car seats manufactured between December 26, 2025, and September 30, 2026. The recall is a direct response to safety test results from Stiftung Warentest and ADAC. The risk is specifically tied to using the seat in its flattest reclining position on the ISOFIX VARIO BASE 5Z base station; in a frontal collision, the harness buckle may release automatically, potentially causing the child to be ejected. Users are advised not to use the seat in the reclining position on the Vario Base 5Z, though it remains safe in an upright position or when secured with a vehicle seat belt.
