Sahel region militant insurgency and drone warfare

Overview

Armed groups in the Sahel region, particularly in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, have increasingly utilized black-market drones for surveillance and attacks. The Al Qaeda-linked group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) has been identified as a significant user, conducting over 80 drone-related attacks in 2025.

Security instability has continued to escalate, impacting the Tillabéri region of Niger and Niger State in Nigeria. In Niger, militant activity in Tillabéri poses a threat to the capital, Niamey, prompting the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) to attempt coordinated joint operations. In Nigeria’s Borgu Local Government Area, suspected terrorists have carried out attacks on communities, including a mosque, resulting in the abduction of an estimated 60 to over 80 people.
