Saint Augustine’s University bankruptcy and class suspension

Saint Augustine’s University, a historically Black college in Raleigh, North Carolina, has decided to halt all classes and educational programs for the fall 2026 semester. This decision follows the institution’s loss of accreditation and its filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier in the year.

The university had previously intended to launch several online, non-degree programs in fields such as public health, programming, and artificial intelligence to generate revenue. However, administrators paused these plans to reduce payroll obligations and overall expenditures as part of a strategy to emerge from bankruptcy in a stronger financial position.

During court proceedings, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge David Warren expressed skepticism regarding the university’s capacity to fulfill commitments to prospective students, describing the institution as “essentially closed.” To manage its $74 million debt, the university is currently utilizing funds from the nonprofit lender Self-Help Ventures Fund and is evaluating the sale of campus real estate.

In a recent bankruptcy hearing, university officials provided creditors with updates on cost-cutting measures and a proposed budget. The proceedings also addressed a lawsuit filed by the estate of former Chancellor Dr. Christine McPhail against the university and two former board chairs. The judge issued a temporary stay to prevent additional costs from accruing while the matter is reviewed. The court has requested that legal counsel provide updates regarding insurance coverage and an updated cash collateral budget at the next hearing, scheduled for October 1.
