Sakharov Prize nomination for Cuban political prisoners

Overview

Félix Navarro Rodríguez and his daughter, Saylí Navarro Álvarez, have been nominated for the European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. The nomination was led by a committee of former Cuban political prisoners to advocate for the release of individuals detained for political reasons in Cuba.

The Navarros were imprisoned following anti-government protests in Matanzas province in July 2021. Félix is serving a nine-year sentence and Saylí is serving eight years. Amnesty International has designated them as prisoners of conscience amid reports of harsh detention conditions and physical assault. The European Parliament has placed their case on its agenda, with a debate scheduled for September 16 and a resolution vote expected on September 17.
