Authorities in Dong Nai, Vietnam, identified nearly 4,000 pigs contaminated with Salbutamol, a prohibited beta-agonist used to accelerate weight gain, across six different locations. Following inspections conducted between late July and early August, officials destroyed approximately 3,000 pigs from five farms. While some owners complied with destruction orders, others initially resisted. Investigations revealed that the facilities involved were not registered for livestock farming and were primarily used for fattening pigs. The banned substance was reportedly mixed into pellet feed for pigs weighing between 90 and 100 kg. Due to the significant food safety risks, the Dong Nai Department of Agriculture and Rural Development transferred the case files to the Ho Chi Minh City Police Investigation Agency for formal legal action. Recent inspections have uncovered further contamination. In Tan An commune, 2,350 pigs tested positive for high levels of Salbutamol. Nguyen Truong Giang, Director of the Dong Nai Department of Livestock and Fisheries, confirmed that quantitative testing of urine samples verified the presence of the banned substance at high concentrations. These pigs are under monitoring and are prohibited from entering the market until they test negative. This follows previous findings in Dau Giay ward and Tri An ward, where 1,782 and 219 pigs, respectively, also tested positive for the prohibited substance.
