Salta public transport funding crisis

Public transport companies operating under the SAETA umbrella in Salta, Argentina, have warned of a potential service collapse. Sub-concessionaire companies issued a formal warning to Governor Gustavo Sáenz, stating that current funds are only sufficient to cover approximately five days of fuel purchases.

The crisis is driven by unpaid debts from state agencies for services rendered, with debt for services provided in April exceeding 60 percent of the total owed. Additionally, a 12 percent cumulative drop in kilometers traveled has impacted projected revenues.

As the situation progressed, SAETA formally notified bus companies to ensure the continuity of services despite these financial difficulties. The agency is currently requesting extraordinary financial assistance from the Salta provincial government to address the operating deficit. While SAETA noted that payments are being made according to available resources, it has warned companies against any unilateral suspension or reduction of service, emphasizing that contractual obligations remain in effect.
