The Unidad de Financiamiento, Transparencia y Fiscalización (UFTF) has issued a punitive resolution against former Honduran presidential candidate Salvador Nasralla regarding his 2025 campaign finances. The UFTF identified significant inconsistencies, including a failure to justify approximately 73 million lempiras in resources. The potential fine is estimated to exceed 146 million lempiras, calculated by doubling the amount of funds that exceeded legal limits due to a lack of timely notification. Nasralla has rejected the allegations, characterizing the issues as administrative “oversights” and claiming the move is a political attempt to prevent his participation in the 2029 elections. In recent developments, Nasralla admitted to depositing campaign contributions into a personal bank account, explaining that certain business donors required funds to be kept separate from official party accounts to facilitate collection. The UFTF has since imposed a specific fine of 146.4 million lempiras (approximately $5.42 million) due to administrative irregularities, specifically the failure to timely report 21 private contributions that exceeded 120 minimum wages. Roberto Contreras, acting as president of the Liberal Party's Central Executive Council, has questioned the financial reports and announced a party session to address the inconsistencies. In response to criticisms, the UFTF defended the legality of the sanction through Resolution N. ° SE-3041-2026.
