A banking error at a Salzburger Sparkasse branch in the Gnigl district of Salzburg resulted in two Georgian students being mistakenly paid over 120,000 euros in cash. The students had originally intended to withdraw 12,900 euros to demonstrate sufficient financial means for their Austrian residence permit renewals. One student, Giorgi Bolkvadze, a 25-year-old Georgian, reportedly did not realize the scale of the mistake until several hours later. After withdrawing the cash and handing it to a friend, the student attended a training session, unaware of the discrepancy. After the bank contacted him via telephone to report the error, the students returned to the branch and handed back the excess funds, totaling approximately 108,000 euros. funds. The bank confirmed the incident was caused by “human error” and apologized to the student. As a token of appreciation for their honesty and cooperation, the bank provided the students with a bag of branded gummy candies.
