Sam Eljamel medical inquiry

Public hearings have commenced in Edinburgh regarding an inquiry into Sam Eljamel, a neurosurgeon who served at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee until his 2013 suspension. The investigation follows allegations that Eljamel may have harmed as many as 200 people. The initial phase of the four-week process aims to examine Eljamel’s career, the circumstances of his supervision, and document management systems within NHS Tayside.

As the inquiry progresses, testimony has revealed that Eljamel may have performed multiple “wrong site surgeries,” which are categorized as “never events” within the NHS. Evidence suggests he may not have been transparent with patients or colleagues regarding these errors.

Further complications have emerged regarding medical records. A patient reported that his surgical notes remain missing despite promises of answers from NHS Tayside leadership. Additionally, it was revealed that approximately 40 theatre logbooks were destroyed by NHS Tayside in July 2025, an action that occurred despite a “do not destroy” order issued by the inquiry chairman, Lord Weir. Eljamel, who was removed from the GMC register, is reportedly practicing as a surgeon in Libya.
