Argentine author Samanta Schweblin has been named the winner of the 2026 Premio Malaparte, an international literary award presented on the island of Capri. Schweblin, a Berlin-based writer known for her short stories, represents a departure from the award’s historical tendency to honor novelists. The jury, which included Leonardo Colombati and Emanuele Trevi, highlighted her ability to explore themes of anxiety, fear, and unease. Schweblin noted her affinity for the short story genre, referencing the literary traditions of Argentina and authors such as Borges and Cortázar. She described writing as a tool to confront human fears, anxieties, and vulnerabilities. Her most recent work, ‘Il buon male’, is a collection of short stories published by Einaudi. The award ceremony is scheduled for the first weekend of October, specifically Saturday, October 3, and Sunday, October 4. 4, at the Certosa di San Giacomo in Capri. During the announcement, jury member and writer Emanuele Trevi praised Schweblin’s ‘extraordinary imagination’ and her mastery of narrative pacing and length, noting that her work often blends reality with dreamlike elements. Trevi also observed that this is the second consecutive year the prize has been awarded to a Spanish-language author, following Fernando Aramburu’s win in 2025, though he characterized this as a coincidence. The announcement was made by prize curator Gabriella Buontempo. Curator Buontempo and organizer Michele Pontecorvo Ricciardi noted that selecting Schweblin aims to engage younger readers by highlighting diverse writing styles and addressing modern attention spans. The prize is supported by the Campania Region and Ferrarelle.
