Sampdoria continues to navigate squad restructuring and a significant injury crisis during its August and September 2026 campaign. Under coach Bernardo Corradi, the club has integrated nine new signings, including Lorenzo Insigne and Peter Vindahl, while managing roster constraints regarding the ‘Over’ list. Following a 1-1 draw against Cesena and a 2-1 comeback loss to Juve Stabia, the club’s injury concerns intensified. Key players Salvatore Esposito, Fabio Depaoli, and Mattia Viti were forced off during the Juve Stabia match, with Viti suffering a potential cruciate ligament injury. While Corradi confirmed the return of several players, including Tobias Lauritsen, Luca Ravanelli, Samuel Mbabu, and Valentin Karamoh, the team struggled to find momentum. This lack of rhythm culminated in a 2-0 defeat against Mantova, marking Sampdoria’s third consecutive loss and leaving them at the bottom of the Serie B standings with only one point from four matches. However, the club secured its first victory of the season in a 2-1 comeback win against Catanzaro at the Luigi Ferraris stadium. After Stefan Gartenmann conceded an own goal to give Catanzaro the lead, Lorenzo Insigne equalized in the 56th minute. Despite being reduced to ten men following a red card for Abildgaard in the 64th minute, Tjaš Begić scored the winning goal in the 85th minute by capitalizing on a defensive error. Following the match, Corradi praised the team’s resilience, noting the performance showed the “technical quality necessary to move away from the bottom of the standings.” This result moves Sampdoria to four points. While the victory provided relief, it also sparked tension regarding officiating. Reports highlighted frustration over Abildgaard’s direct red card, with some analysts and former referees suggesting the decision was disproportionate compared to previous incidents involving other players.
