As the San Antonio Spurs prepare for the 2026-27 NBA season, their starting lineup is ranked as the third best in the league, trailing only the Oklahoma City Thunder and the New York Knicks. While Victor Wembanyama, De’Aaron Fox, and Stephon Castle are confirmed starters, the remaining two positions remain unsettled. Coach Mitch Johnson has noted a need for on-the-job training to decide if the team will start three guards, including 20-year-old Dylan Harper. This continues a rotation competition at the point guard position between Fox and Harper. Roster depth is currently being impacted by injuries and player transitions. Tobias Harris is sidelined with a strained left calf and is expected to miss the preseason, potentially opening minutes for Carter Bryant at power forward. Additionally, following a three-year, $45 million extension, Julian Champagnie has expressed a willingness to move to a bench role to accommodate the team's needs. In a recent roster move, the Spurs formally exercised team options for Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, and Carter Bryant, securing their contracts through the 2027/28 season. Castle, the former Rookie of the Year, is set to receive approximately $12.7 million for the 2027/28 season and will become eligible for a rookie scale extension next offseason. Dylan Harper’s third-year option was also exercised, with a guaranteed salary of $13.6 million for 2027/28. He is expected to enter the 2026/27 season as a starter alongside Castle, Fox, Devin Vassell, and Wembanyama. Carter Bryant, the 14th overall pick from the 2025 draft, will earn $5.4 million for the 2027/28 season following his option exercise, with the team anticipating significant developmental steps for the forward.
