Following a fatal shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego on May 18, the parents of Caleb Vazquez have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Park Mental Health. The lawsuit alleges negligence and medical malpractice, claiming the facility failed to intervene despite warnings that Vazquez posed an imminent threat. Court filings indicate that on May 14, the FBI notified Vazquez’s mother that her son had been communicating on the dark web regarding school shootings and suicide. The lawsuit alleges the mother notified both the treatment facility and her son’s therapist of these warnings on May 14 and May 15. On the morning of the attack, facility employees informed the mother that Vazquez was ~~missing.~~ missing; surveillance footage reportedly showed him leaving the property at 8 p.m. the previous evening. The May 18 incident involved Vazquez and 17-year-old Cain Clark, who killed a security guard and two community members before both teenagers died in a vehicle. Investigators determined Clark shot Vazquez in the head before committing suicide. Legal counsel for Park Mental Health has rejected the claims, stating the facility is not responsible for the movements of clients in voluntary treatment programs and noting that Vazquez was not under court-ordered confinement.
