San Diego State University football continues to navigate significant health and roster challenges as it enters its inaugural Pac-12 conference season. The program is managing a mumps outbreak that has resulted in 14 confirmed cases and one probable case, primarily affecting the football team. This health crisis has severely impacted roster availability. Nearly three dozen players are currently listed on the Pac-12 availability report, with 15 players designated as “doubtful” or “out” ahead of the conference opener against the Texas State Bobcats. On the field, the Aztecs enter conference play with a 1-3 record, struggling with offensive inconsistency and the absence of a strong passing attack. The upcoming matchup against Texas State presents a difficult test, as the Bobcats currently lead the Pac-12 in total yards. Recent developments regarding the outbreak indicate that all infected individuals had previously received two doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. In response, San Diego County health officials are recommending a third MMR booster dose for close contacts. SDSU is coordinating with local and state health departments to conduct daily screenings, testing, and contact tracing. The university has also issued health alerts and is offering a free MMR booster clinic.
