The incident triggered a large law enforcement response south of downtown, including Santa Clara County sheriff’s deputies. The injured officer was transported to Valley Medical Center. While witnesses suggested a suspect might be barricaded, authorities had not confirmed specific details regarding the suspect’s status or the officer’s condition as of Tuesday night. Subsequent reports identified the suspect as Anthony Chavez, who was allegedly linked to two armed robberies at a bank and a shopping center over the preceding weekend. The confrontation began after officers spotted Chavez driving an SUV. Following a brief pursuit, Chavez fled on foot and entered a private residence containing young children. During the ensuing gunfight, the officer was wounded and reported to be in critical condition. Chavez was killed during the exchange of gunfire.
