San Juan de Dios loneliness awareness week

Overview

The Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God, working with local authorities, launched the first ‘Week Against Unwanted Loneliness’ in Spain, running from October 19 to 25. The initiative focuses on several Spanish regions, including Granada, Málaga, Córdoba, Sevilla, and San Juan de Aznalfarache.

Activities are designed to foster social bonds and visibility. In Granada, citizens are encouraged to share coffee with strangers to promote conversation, while the ‘Plazas contra la soledad’ (Squares against loneliness) project in Seville and San Juan de Aznalfarache utilizes public spaces to encourage dialogue.

The campaign addresses loneliness as a “social emergency” impacting emotional and physical health. Statistics indicate that unwanted loneliness affects 20% of the Spanish population, including one in four young people. In Andalusia, the rate is 22.6%, with 30.2% of those aged 18 to 34 reporting feelings of loneliness.
