San Juan egg brand counterfeit fraud in Mexico
Overview
Authorities in Durango, Mexico, have uncovered a fraud scheme involving counterfeit eggs marketed under the San Juan brand. In the Región Laguna, specifically Gómez Palacio, inspectors from the Comisión para la Protección contra Riesgos Sanitarios del Estado (Coprised) seized hundreds of eggs featuring cloned seals and falsified traceability codes. These markings were designed to mimic the official blue-ink seal and unique shell-printed codes used to ensure sanitary compliance and identify the farm of origin.
Recent inspections, including operations at the Mercado de Abastos, have revealed specific methods of deception. Counterfeit stamps often exhibit irregular letter thickness or inconsistent print quality compared to the uniform impressions on genuine products. Coprised is expanding inspections across 12 municipalities in the region to identify the source of these goods and sanction distributors.
Beyond physical counterfeiting, officials identified a digital component to the fraud, noting that fake websites impersonate the San Juan brand to lure consumers with false promotions. The company has stated it does not sell products online and advised the public to purchase only from formal establishments. To identify authentic products, consumers are encouraged to check for irregular ink quality or poorly defined characters on the shell.
