Santa Barbara school district racial incident
Overview
Four female students at San Marcos High School in Santa Barbara were disciplined after a viral TikTok video showed them using blackface to imitate an AI-generated image of Black boys. The video utilized captions and emojis frequently used as shorthand for racial slurs.
While school officials stated the incident was reported through the district’s ‘Safe to Speak Up’ system and handled via established disciplinary processes, the response drew significant criticism. The NAACP Santa Barbara branch condemned the district’s actions as inadequate, with local president Connie Alexander calling for more transparent protocols and equitable discipline.
Following the incident, protests emerged at a Santa Barbara Unified School District board meeting involving parents, students, and educators. Critics highlighted a perceived delay in communication, noting it took approximately two weeks for administration to notify families after the initial report. Ethnic studies teacher Abel Gonzalez noted that Black students on campus were ‘reeling from the fallout.’ In response to the fallout, Black Student Unions from San Marcos and Dos Pueblos high schools organized a walkout to protest anti-Black racism and demand greater transparency from district leadership.
In response to the public outcry, the district announced it is implementing new response protocols and updated discipline policies. Chief Operating Officer Steve Venz stated the new racial incident response protocol will ensure consistency across schools by establishing specific investigation timelines and a team-based approach. This includes ‘repair’ work to support harmed students. Additionally, the district is updating its discipline matrix, which had not been significantly revised since 2019 or 2020. These updates were developed with the Committee Advancing Black Achievement, Wellness, and Excellence (CABAWE).
