The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has initiated a series of investments to modernize and expand the equipment of its Local Police and Police Intervention Unit (Unipol). Initial efforts included a 170,000 euro investment to acquire 15 BMW F 800 GS motorcycles. These vehicles, equipped with specialized gear and technical features, were intended to improve urban mobility and officer response times. Following this, the City Council approved further contracts totaling 689,000 euros. This broader procurement includes over 260,000 euros for defensive gear for Unipol—such as riot shields, helmets, and pepper projectile launchers—as well as 285 portable radios and the rental of several police and civil protection vehicles. These measures aim to facilitate the return of Unipol agents to active street duty by the end of the year. Most recently, the City Council approved a 95,345 euro investment to acquire 15 non-lethal electric weapons, specifically Static Control Devices (DEC). These devices feature LED screens and an integrated image capture system that activates during use to provide digital evidence for legal purposes. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez stated that this modernization will provide officers with “more adequate tools for complex situations,” reinforcing safety for both the police and the citizenry.
