The city of Como prepared for and commenced celebrations for its patron saint, Sant’Abbondio. Initial preparations focused on the solemnity of the saint, with plans to offer extraordinary access to the Basilica of Sant’Abbondio and the Cathedral for liturgical services and a message from Cardinal Oscar Cantoni. As the festivities progressed into the Fiera di Sant’Abbondio, the event expanded to include cultural, religious, and gastronomic activities. The program featured an agricultural market, livestock exhibitions, and art displays such as ‘Como, vecchie immagini’. Religious services continued through August 31, accompanied by musical performances. Gastronomic efforts, including traditional meals served in the Basilica, were organized to raise funds for charity, supporting causes such as the Casa Nazareth soup kitchen. During the celebrations, the Bishop of Como delivered a message to citizens and authorities emphasizing the importance of peace and dialogue. He called for a ‘culture of encounter’, urging individuals to view others as brothers rather than enemies and to avoid the tendency to disqualify those with differing opinions. The festivities also highlighted local agriculture through the Campagna Amica market. Farmers from Coldiretti Como Lecco provided seasonal products and regional specialties, aiming to strengthen the direct relationship between consumers and local producers while showcasing the economic value of Larian agriculture.
