Banco Santander has implemented a strategic growth plan centered on expanding its presence in high-profitability markets. In August 2026, the bank completed a $12.2 billion acquisition of Webster in the United States, which expanded its American operations to approximately $327 billion in assets and nearly eight million customers. To facilitate this reallocation of capital, Santander divested portions of its Polish operations, including a 49% stake in Santander Bank Polska and 50% of its asset management business to Erste for approximately €7 billion. Following the acquisition, the bank has accelerated its integration efforts for Webster and TSB. Santander now aims to capture the majority of its projected 1.2 billion euro in synergies by 2028, moving up the timeline from 2029. A significant portion of these cost savings, roughly $800 million, is expected to result from the Webster acquisition. To drive these efficiencies, the bank has launched an internal initiative called ‘Project Unity’. This program seeks to unify technologies, reduce costs, and improve efficiency across American operations, with the goal of generating an additional $150 million in annual profits. The strategy also utilizes the recent launch of Openbank to scale retail banking and leverages liquidity from the Webster acquisition to reduce financing costs. During this period of expansion, the bank reported a 15 percent increase in underlying profit to 7.3 billion euros for the first half of 2026. Despite this growth, Jefferies downgraded the bank from ‘Buy’ to ‘Hold,’ while raising its price target from 12.00 to 13.00 euros.
