Santos Laguna has shown signs of improvement during the Liga MX Apertura 2026 tournament following a period of significant struggle. After starting the tournament with zero points through five matches, the club managed to secure one point by Matchday 8, placing them in 17th position. Heading into their Matchday 8 fixture against FC Juárez, both teams were described as being in a “duel of urgencies,” with both sides seeking their first victory of the season. By the ninth round, Santos Laguna secured a 3-2 victory against Toluca at the Estadio Nemesio Diez. Building on this momentum, Santos Laguna achieved their third consecutive victory by defeating Pachuca 1-0, followed by a 2-1 comeback win against Atlético de San Luis. Under manager Renato Paiva, the club has continued its resurgence, described as one of the tournament’s “dark horses.” This upward trajectory continued with a dominant 5-0 victory over Querétaro at the Estadio TSM Corona, marking the club's fifth consecutive win. Striker Tahiel Jiménez led the performance with a hat-trick, scoring in the 29th, 63rd, and 93rd minutes. Additional goals were contributed by Eduardo ‘Mudo’ Aguirre and Javier Güemez, the latter via a penalty. The match also resulted in a red card for Querétaro’s Diego Reyes following a VAR review. This victory moved Santos Laguna to 16 points and 8th position in the standings, placing them within reach of the Liguilla qualification zone. As the tournament progressed to Matchday 13, Santos Laguna entered a fixture against Pumas UNAM while maintaining a five-game winning streak. Having climbed from penultimate place to ninth in the general standings, the team has demonstrated defensive strength, conceding only one goal in their last three matches, bolstered by the offensive contributions of Jiménez. However, the team later suffered a 4-1 loss to Xolos de Tijuana.
