Saramacca River pollution and fish mortality

Following reports of mass fish mortality in the Saramacca River that first emerged in late June, environmental investigations have identified significant pollution. Initial water analyses conducted in French Guiana and France suggested potential structural contamination from heavy metals, including iron, aluminum, and manganese. While previous tests had detected cyanide and mercury at levels below standard limits, subsequent findings confirmed that cyanide caused the fish deaths and that elevated concentrations of heavy metals were present in living fish.

The situation has evolved into a political controversy in Suriname. The political party PALU has labeled the event a ‘national disaster’, criticizing President Jennifer Simons’ administration for an insufficient response. Critics have questioned the delay in providing clarity from the National Environmental Authority and have called for broader warnings to downstream communities. Additionally, there are growing demands for stricter oversight regarding gold mining companies permitted to use cyanide under Grassalco, as well as discussions concerning potential bans on cyanide imports.
