The stability of flight connections between Sardinia and mainland Italy remains precarious following a second failed regional tender to assign the Alghero-Milan Linate route under the territorial continuity regime. As no offers were received, the Sardinia Region must now organize a new bidding process to secure the connection. To prevent an immediate service interruption, ITA Airways has formally communicated its willingness to extend its current service until January 31, 2027. This extension is intended to serve as a bridge until February 1, 2027, when a new territorial continuity model is expected to begin. The regional government stated that this new regime aims to provide better conditions for passengers, including increased flight frequencies and lower fares. Recent developments have introduced immediate logistical disruptions, as flight bookings for the Alghero-Milan Linate service have been suspended for any travel dates following October 24. This suspension has created significant uncertainty for residents in the Sassari province who depend on the route for employment and medical appointments. Local political figures, including Michele Pais, have criticized the regional government for its silence regarding the booking blackout. While reports suggest that ITA Airways may have accepted a service extension permitted by the Ministry Furthermore, Pais has warned of Infrastructure and Transport—which could potentially bypass the need for risk of Alghero Airport becoming a new negotiated procedure—passengers remain unable “marginal, seasonal facility” due to secure flights through private management interests. He highlighted the end reduction of October. Local officials continue essential territorial continuity flights between Alghero and Rome, which have dropped from four to describe three daily flights. Pais has also called on the situation as an administrative cycle of failed bids followed by emergency bridge solutions. Sardinia Region to consider reacquiring the airport to protect its strategic importance and criticized proposals for bus links between Alghero, Sassari, and Olbia, suggesting such moves would divert traffic from weaker hubs to stronger ones under private ownership.
