The Sarmizegetusa Regia UNESCO World Heritage site in Romania has implemented restricted visiting hours ~~for August 2026~~ to accommodate major restoration and conservation projects. Following the weekend-only access schedule in August 2026, the site has transitioned to a new schedule for September. The site is now open ~~to the public only on Saturdays and Sundays~~ from ~~09:00~~ Friday to ~~20:00, remaining~~ Sunday, but remains closed from Monday ~~through Friday.~~ to Thursday due to ongoing work at the Tenth Terrace. Work is focused on the fortified area and the X-th Terrace, including the consolidation of the Great Andesite Temple and the reinforcement of supporting walls. These projects are being financed through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and European Union funds, with a total project value of approximately €11.3 million. While the Hunedoara County Council stated these restrictions are necessary to ensure works progress “rapidly and safely,” the decision has faced criticism. Local residents and guesthouse owners in the Grădiștea Valley have expressed concerns regarding the economic impact of the closures during the peak summer tourism season. Many business owners had previously petitioned authorities to find ways to continue the work without such significant restrictions on access.
