SARS-CoV-2 COVID-19 pandemic

Overview

COVID-19 is a contagious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus that initiated a global pandemic in January 2020. Symptoms range from fever, fatigue, and cough to breathing difficulties and loss of taste or smell. While roughly one-third of infected individuals show no noticeable symptoms, 81% of patients experience mild to moderate symptoms, such as mild pneumonia.

Approximately 14% of cases develop severe symptoms like hypoxia, and 5% face critical complications including multiorgan dysfunction or respiratory failure. Older populations are noted to be at a higher risk for severe illness. Some patients suffer from long-term effects known as ‘long COVID’, which may involve organ damage lasting months or years.

Transmission occurs through the inhalation of infectious particles or contact with the eyes, nose, or mouth via contaminated surfaces. Risk is higher in close proximity or in indoor settings where airborne particles remain suspended. Individuals can remain contagious for up to 20 days, even in the absence of symptoms.
