Diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi rebels have emerged through Iranian mediation. Initial reports suggested Saudi Arabia might offer a $1 billion financial package to secure a ceasefire, a proposal discussed during high level diplomatic visits involving officials from Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan, and Turkey. These negotiations follow a period of intensified hostilities, including Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure and military sites, as well as Saudi led strikes in Yemen’s Al-Jawf province. As negotiations progressed, reports indicated that the Houthi movement demanded $51 billion in compensation from Saudi Arabia to cover damages from years of military airstrikes and blockades. The Houthis also reportedly sought official recognition from Riyadh as the legitimate governing authority in Yemen. However, a Sana’a based journalist disputed these specific figures, alleging that the authorities in Sana’a are actually seeking compensation for total economic losses in Yemen, estimated at $1.13 trillion. Saudi Arabia has since categorically denied reports claiming the Houthis demanded $51 billion and formal recognition. Saudi Deputy Minister for Public Diplomacy, Rayed Krimly, described such claims as “pure fabrication” by news writers or their sources. Krimly stated that Yemen already possesses an internationally recognized government and accused the Houthis of rebelling against it, contributing to famine, and attacking commercial shipping in the Red Sea. Regarding the scale of compensation, journalist Hussain Albukhaiti rejected the $51 billion figure, alleging the movement estimates total war losses in Yemen at $1.13 trillion. He claimed the lower figure was a leak intended to portray the group as “merely chasing money.”
