Saudi Arabia has temporarily suspended operations on its strategic 1,200km East-West oil pipeline following a series of drone attacks in the Riyadh and Medina regions. The Saudi Energy Ministry and Foreign Ministry confirmed the strikes caused material damage and human injuries. Both Baghdad and Riyadh have identified the drones as having originated from Iraqi territory, specifically the Maysan province.

In response, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi ordered the dismissal of the Maysan province operations commander and launched an investigation. Despite the severity of the attack, Saudi Arabia has declined to retaliate against Iraq at this stage, following a request from the Iraqi Prime Minister to allow Baghdad to secure its borders.

The pipeline is a critical piece of infrastructure, allowing Saudi Arabia to transport crude oil from the eastern production fields to the Red Sea port of Yanbu, effectively bypassing the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts note the pipeline carries approximately 4% to 5% of the global oil supply. The disruption, occurring alongside Houthi advances in Yemen and increased tensions in the Red Sea, has contributed to global crude oil prices rising above $100 per barrel.
