Saudi Arabian oil export and maritime security
Overview
Saudi Arabia’s crude oil exports experienced a recovery in June, rising to 3.993 million barrels per day from a record low in May. This increase in production and exports was potentially supported by a memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States, which facilitated increased vessel movement through the Strait of Hormuz and allowed Saudi Aramco to resume oil loading after previous halts caused by US-Iran conflict escalations.
However, the export landscape has since faced significant logistical and security challenges due to maritime tensions in the Red Sea. To avoid the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, Saudi Aramco has restructured transport plans, chartering tankers to move oil from Yanbu Port via alternative routes such as the Suez Canal and the Cape of Good Hope. These shifts have led to longer transit times and increased shipping and insurance costs.
Furthermore, security risks to energy infrastructure have intensified. Following strikes on August 18, satellite imagery and international reports indicated damage to Aramco facilities and storage tanks in Jizan.
