Saudi Aramco energy security and oil supply resilience

Overview

Following a temporary suspension of the East-West Pipeline on September 13 due to drone attacks, Saudi Aramco CEO Amin Nasser emphasized the infrastructure’s resilience, noting that its multiple parallel lines allow for operational flexibility and rapid restoration of service. The company is currently exploring additional export routes and increased storage capacities outside Saudi Arabia to enhance supply security.

By early October, Nasser warned that global oil inventories have reached “alarmingly low levels,” citing the loss of approximately 3 billion barrels of supply due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. He noted that rebuilding these reserves could take up to two years once maritime stability in the Strait of Hormuz is restored. While strategic and commercial reserves have been utilized to support the market, Nasser cautioned that these measures do not resolve the fundamental supply-demand imbalance. Despite these pressures, Gulf exports have risen to 15.5 million barrels per day, and Saudi Aramco has restored its East-West pipeline to approximately 80% capacity.
