Diplomatic engagement between Saudi Arabia and Iraq has intensified in Riyadh. Following Syria’s return to the Arab League, the Syrian Foreign Minister arrived in Riyadh to discuss bilateral and international issues. Simultaneously, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi conducted his first official visit since taking office in May. The visit follows a period of tension involving drone attacks on Saudi infrastructure, including an attack on an East-West oil pipeline that Riyadh identified as originating from Iraqi territory. During meetings with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, al-Zaidi provided assurances that Iraqi territory would not be used to launch attacks against Saudi Arabia or other regional nations. The leaders discussed strengthening security coordination and economic cooperation, expressing cooperation. However, the visit has drawn conflicting reactions. Members of the Anbar Alliance criticized the trip, describing it as “insulting and disappointing.” Raed Abdullah al-Dulaimi, a desire member of the alliance, claimed the visit was reduced to transform geopolitical interests into just 45 minutes and alleged that the Saudi government requested al-Zaidi meet alone while his delegation waited. Al-Dulaimi noted the visit yielded no tangible results, specifically failing to address Iraqi claims regarding an oil pipeline extending to the Yanbu port. In contrast, political analysts suggest the engagement could serve as a long-term partnership gateway for enhanced economic partnership. Discussions have centered on potential mutual investment in the energy and oil sectors, with proponents viewing Saudi Arabia as a pivotal partner for Iraq to promote regional stability. bolster its economy and strategic influence.
