Saxony regional rail service reductions

Overview

Public transport authorities in Saxony are planning significant reductions in regional and S-Bahn train services, effective with the December 13 timetable change. These cuts are driven by rising station fees and track access charges (Trassenpreise).

The Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe (VVO) reported that costs for the ZVVO association will increase by approximately 8.8 million euros in 2026, with annual projections exceeding 14 million euros for 2027. These financial pressures follow a March 2026 European Court of Justice ruling that invalidated previous caps on track access prices for local transport.

Proposed service reductions include potential discontinuation of the S3 S-Bahn section between Tharandt and Freiberg during peak hours, and the RB45 regional line operating only every two hours on weekends between Döbeln and Elsterwerda. Other lines, such as the RB71 (Pirna–Sebnitz) and S-Bahn lines S1 and S2, face potential cuts. Additionally, the Verkehrsverbund Mittelsachsen (VMS) is under financial pressure, which may lead to reduced services on regional lines and City-Bahn connections, particularly on weekends and holidays.
