A series of violent attacks at schools across Poland has prompted a massive national security response. Following incidents in Leszczydół-Nowiny, Ostrołęka, and Warsaw, authorities have expanded their operations. Police have deployed approximately 40,000 officers to conduct nearly 65,000 checks in educational facilities, resulting in 117 detentions—mostly of individuals aged 13 to 19—and the seizure of 110 dangerous items, including knives, machetes, and homemade explosives. Recent violence includes a 15-year-old attacker killing a 37-year-old caretaker in Leszczydół-Nowiny, a 19-year-old injuring nine people in Ostrołęka, and a 21-year-old woman attacking three people at a post-secondary school in Warsaw’s Praga district. In the Warsaw incident, victims aged 17, 17, and 24 were attacked while submitting enrollment documents; the 17-year-old victim was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. While rumors of an internet challenge promoting such attacks have circulated, the government stated it has found no evidence to support this. Authorities are also investigating potential disinformation campaigns, including possible Russian involvement, aimed at inciting panic. Prime Minister Donald Tusk has characterized the violence as “spontaneous acts” driven by a “ponura moda na przemoc” (grim fashion for violence) and the online glorification of violent content. In response to escalating tensions, Polish security services have been placed on high alert following reports of potential assassination attempts targeting Prime Minister Tusk and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. An emergency meeting was convened at the Internal Security Agency (ABW) counter-terrorism center, involving the national police, the State Protection Service (SOP), and the ABW to coordinate a response. This heightened alert follows previous arrests of eight individuals suspected of conducting reconnaissance on military and critical infrastructure for sabotage operations. The Ministry of Interior and Administration has issued new safety protocols, including securing entrances and establishing internal shelter zones. New guidelines also strictly prohibit parents from arriving at schools during active alarms to prevent obstructing emergency services.
