The research reveals that mass loss occurs primarily through melting and fragmentation rather than simple evaporation. The process involves several key stages, including initial heating, rapid spinning, and fragmentation which increases surface area, eventually leading to the formation of a fusion crust as the remaining layer cools. This model allows scientists to more precisely link recovered meteorites to the light and sound recorded during their descent. On the collector market, rare specimens such as pallasites or fragments from the Moon and Mars can command prices as high as 5,000 euros per gram, far exceeding the value of gold. The market value is driven by chemical composition, rarity, and documented origin. Legal frameworks for ownership vary by region. In the Czech Republic, finders generally retain ownership, whereas in Germany, the state may claim specimens of high scientific value. In Slovakia, meteorites are classified as protected objects that must be surrendered to authorities. Tracking these events is supported by organizations like the European Fireball Network.
