Recent developments have brought new scrutiny to the professional conduct and records of former US virologist Anthony Fauci. Documents obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation suggest that in approximately 2012, Fauci instructed an aide to permanently delete an email exchange concerning warnings about gain-of-function research. The exchange reportedly involved a journalist warning that such experiments could cause a “doomsday” ‘doomsday’ scenario and harm the reputation of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). These findings suggest a potential violation of federal law regarding the destruction of public records. Additionally, personal diaries belonging to Fauci, covering the period from 2019 to 2022, have emerged following an initiative by Senator Rand Paul. These diaries, which were maintained on government computers and servers, contain his professional and personal reflections during his tenure on the White House Coronavirus Task Force and as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Senator Paul has since released further batches of diary entries covering the years 2015 to 2019. These documents include private political reflections on former President Donald Trump, with Fauci describing Trump as acting ‘unpresidential’ in early 2017 and suggesting he ‘should be impeached’ during the January 2019 government shutdown. The entries also contain private commentary on public health, specifically noting ‘multiple flaws in the design and the analysis of the data’ regarding an Ebola vaccine used during a West African outbreak, despite high efficacy reports from the World Health Organization in 2015.
