Navitas Petroleum is accelerating the development of the Sea Lion oil field in the Falkland Islands through the acquisition of the OSX-1 floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) platform. The acquisition, valued at approximately $125 million, is intended to expand operations from the Northern Development Area into the Central Development Area (CDA). This expansion is expected to increase production capacity from 55,000 barrels per day to as much as 180,000 barrels per day by the end of the decade. Rockhopper Exploration, which holds a 35% stake in the Sea Lion license, is planning an equity capital raise to fund its pro-rata interest in the vessel and cover associated expenditures. Logistical preparations are currently underway, including port expansions and infrastructure development to support a workforce of approximately 260 people. While ‘first oil’ from Phase 1 of the Northern Development Area is targeted for the first quarter of 2028, production from the CDA is expected to begin by the end of 2030. In September 2026, Rockhopper Exploration and Navitas Petroleum confirmed they will proceed with the project despite warnings from Argentine President Javier Milei. Milei has reiterated Argentina’s sovereignty claims and announced potential sanctions against entities exploiting natural resources in the disputed area without Argentine authorization. In a joint statement, the companies asserted that their licenses remain valid and that the development schedule will not be affected, noting that the licenses were granted legally by Falkland Islands authorities with United Kingdom support. The field, located in the North Falkland Basin, is estimated to contain up to 1.7 billion barrels of oil.
