Sea turtle behavior and conservation in the Pacific

Research in the Galápagos Islands has revealed unexpected movement patterns in the yellow morphotype of green sea turtles. While the species is traditionally recognized for long-distance migrations across the Pacific, satellite tracking of nine turtles over 418 days showed that many individuals prefer to remain near specific islands. Some turtles stayed within the waters of a single island for the duration of the study, while others moved primarily between a few islands during colder months.

Scientists suggest this sedentary behavior, or fidelity to specific regions, may be influenced by local factors such as consistent food availability, favorable marine conditions, suitable resting areas, and specific ocean current characteristics.

In a related context of sea turtle activity, the hatching season is currently underway in Los Cabos, Mexico, running from August to October. This period is being utilized for preservation-based tourism and educational programs to highlight the life cycle and environmental threats facing the species.
