Sea turtle conservation and environmental protection in MX

Overview

Sea turtle conservation efforts in Mexico's coastal regions continue to face significant challenges from human interference. In Yucatán, vehicle intrusions on Chuburná beach have resulted in the death of sea turtles, as cars and trucks enter protected sand dunes, crushing nests and disorienting hatchlings.

In the Quintana Roo region, authorities are intensifying responses to various threats. Following a video showing a visitor handling sea turtle hatchlings in Cancún, officials have urged hotels to reinforce tourist education, noting that such actions are federal offenses punishable by prison sentences and significant fines. In Champotón, the Grupo Ecologista Quelonios reported that the illegal use of ATVs in nesting zones destroyed over 1,500 hawksbill turtle eggs and hatchlings, prompting calls for increased security and surveillance.

Broader environmental initiatives are also underway in the region. To combat water pollution, a multi-stage operation involving local ecology departments, the Port Captaincy, and CONANP will begin on September 1 to remove approximately 48 abandoned or sunken vessels from Laguna Nichupté. Additionally, the Quintana Roo Secretariat of Ecology and Environment (SEMA) is developing a strategy to combat beach erosion in Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, and Cozumel through integrated ecosystem restoration and sand repositioning efforts.

These developments follow the introduction of a new Environmental Governance Policy by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, intended to strengthen institutional enforcement, transparency, and citizen participation in protecting natural resources.
