Seattle mayoral recall effort and public safety concerns

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson is facing a recall effort and declining public approval following concerns over public safety. Public favorability reportedly dropped from 57% in April to 37% in August, with only 34% of surveyed voters expressing confidence in the city’s safety plan. This decline follows high-profile incidents, including a July 26 shooting at the Bite of Seattle food festival that killed three people and injured four.

The shooting also led to the controversial resignation of Police Chief Shon Barnes at the Mayor’s request. While the administration later issued a formal explanation stating the resignation was requested to “build a cabinet that is aligned with her administration's values, policy goals, and vision for the Seattle Police Department,” the move drew criticism from City Councilmember Bob Kettle regarding how the executive branch handled the ousting.

A recall petition has been filed citing grievances such as the police chief’s resignation, shootings, drug use, and the deactivation of surveillance cameras. Critics claim these issues have “created chaos.” The Mayor’s office is currently working with an advisory group to select a permanent police chief while Interim Chief Sayles manages operations.
