The dispute between Cagliari striker Sebastiano Esposito and the club has intensified through August 2026. Following friction over unauthorized departure and salary demands, Esposito’s agent, Mario Giuffredi, escalated tensions by calling former sporting director Pietro Accardi a “terror-stricken puppet” and accusing coach Fabio Pisacane of neglecting the player. Legal and media tensions surged after Director General Stefano Melis described Esposito’s contract demands as a “near attempt at extortion.” Giuffredi responded by filing a defamation complaint against Melis and alleging that club president Tommaso Giulini requested a “theatrino”—a fake dispute—to facilitate a €20 million sale. This claim was bolstered by former paparazzo Fabrizio Corona, who claimed to possess audio of a senior official instructing the creation of such a conflict. Esposito’s absence from pre-season training extended to 25 days following a second medical certificate citing “emotional stress and anxiety.” In response to his unauthorized absence, Cagliari considered disciplinary action, including a potential €30,000 fine. The impasse followed Esposito’s rejection of a €1.2 million renewal offer in favor of €1.7 million. As a departure became imminent, a deal was reached for Esposito to join Sassuolo. The transfer is structured as a loan worth approximately €1 million, including an option to purchase for approximately €11 million. Sassuolo has reportedly offered Esposito a contract lasting until 2031. In a finalized exchange, Riccardo Ciervo will move from Sassuolo to Cagliari on loan until June 30, 2027, with a €3 million buyout clause. Cagliari will also receive a 15% percentage on any future resale of Esposito. Following the move, Esposito used social media to publicly thank Giuffredi for his support during the summer window. He described the agent as a “special person” and a “true man,” crediting him with defending him during difficult negotiations and providing guidance to turn his career around.
