Public perception of insecurity in Michoacán ~~has been~~ remains a primary concern for residents. A recent El Financiero poll indicated that 71% of voters identify insecurity as the state’s leading problem, with high levels of dissatisfaction regarding the government’s response to organized crime and corruption. Data from the June 2026 Urban Public Safety Survey (ENSU) showed that Uruapan had one of the highest insecurity perceptions in Mexico at 83.1%, while Morelia saw an increase in insecurity perception to 70.5%. In response to these challenges, Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla has implemented measures under the ‘Plan Michoacán por la Paz y la Justicia,’ which included the delivery of 11 police interceptor vehicles to various municipalities such as Hidalgo, Huetamo, and Zacapu to strengthen the state security strategy. Following a suspension on August 5 due to security threats, the United States government fully resumed official activities in Michoacán on August 13. This resumption allows for the return of USDA-APHIS inspections necessary for certifying avocado exports to the U.S. market. U.S. Ambassador Ronald Johnson attributed the decision to enhanced security measures and coordination by the Mexican Security Cabinet, describing the move as a result of cooperation between the administrations of President Claudia Sheinbaum and President Donald Trump to protect food production and supply chains. However, the U.S. Embassy continues to maintain a Level 4 (Do Not Travel) advisory for the state.
